Air Pilots Cobham Lecture
22nd April 2026RAF Club
The annual Air Pilots Cobham Lecture was given by Rob Evans, a Pilot with EasyJet and a renowned researcher and writer. His lecture was on the record-breaking Alcock and Brown non-stop crossing of the Atlantic in 1919, in a converted Vickers Vimy First World War Bomber. An extraordinary feat given the rudimentary technology. The radio broke down soon after take off, navigation was by compass and stars, spatial awareness in cloud by a bubble tube (spirit level). He gave a great detail on their history, preparation, and subsequent lives. Alcock died several months later in an air crash, but Brown lived on and survived WW2.
